In this book, Bryson, who achieved fame as an author of humourous travel memoirs, goes back to tell the story of not just his own childhood but of the land and time he grew up in: 1950s America. As a kid, Bryson had a vivid fantasy life, and that is not neglected in the memoir. For example: the discovery of an old sweater decorated with the image of lightning bolt radically shifted the boy's world view.
